SUMMARY:Tent of Mourning/Bay Area Ta'anit Esther Actifest
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by AriYael Jewish Healing Center\, The Shalom Center is erecting a Tent of Mourning for all whose hearts are open and tender enough to grieve both Palestinian and Israeli lives lost since and beyond October 7th. In collaboration with over a dozen local and national partners\, and inspired by Queen Esther’s ritualized grief in the Purim story\, we are curating a full day of sessions\, teachings\, and self-directed ritual to support attendees in deepening and expanding their grief. With a mix of traditional and creative mourning practices\, we are opening to the possibility that\, through our shared mourning\, new paths towards peace might shake loose for us as individuals and more broadly.

SUMMARY:Unity\, Separation & Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:2023 Kallah Course Description \n\n\n\nUnity\, Separation & Transcendence: Psychedelics in Contemporary Jewish Life \n\n\n\nThe last few years have seen an extraordinary blossoming of a renewed appreciation of the power of psychedelics as sacred healing medicines. Studies at respected universities have explored the use of psychedelics in treating depression\, grief\, PTSD\, and end-of-life transitions. Many contemporary scholars posit connections between mystical traditions and psychedelics in a wide range of religious traditions including Judaism. \n\n\n\nDeeply revered religious leaders including Reb Zalman\, z”tl\, believed that psychedelics\, if carefully curated for well-screened individuals\, could be used to occasion primary religious experience. \n\n\n\nIn this class we will explore relevant Jewish texts\, and the developing use of mind-expanding sacred medicines to expose dualistic illusions that create separations between oneself\, one another and the divine. In transcendence beyond the ego (the identity which is largely made up of cultural and social constructs and defenses such as notions of patriarchy\, gender roles and feelings of social alienation) one can experience: Echad – Oneness; Ahavah – Unconditional Love; Shlemut – Wholeness; and Yichud – Unity with the Divine. \n\n\n\nCome delve into these insights and what they can mean for the contemporary power and practice of Judaism. We will look at some of the Jewish healing practices that are better enabling people to walk paths of grieving\, deepening of intimacy\, prayer and ritual\, and a host of sacred transitions including end of life work.

SUMMARY:The Path of the Death Doula and How that Guides Providing Comfort to the Bereaved
DESCRIPTION:“The Path of the Death Doula and How that Guides Providing Comfort to the Bereaved” \n\n\n\nRabbi Nadya Gross and Zoe Francesca Goldblatt \n\n\n\nEnd Of Life Doulas are a growing group of grassroots professionals in the End of Life field\, bringing to the end of life what Birth Doulas bring to its beginnings. With a range of emotional and spiritual skill sets as well as practical\, hands-on support\, End of Life Doulas help to normalize death as part of life. We educate families on the dying and grief processes and help maintain an atmosphere in the dying space that is conducive to a peaceful and good death. Doulas’ perspective on grief and loss is unique\, in that they practice death acceptance\, and Jewish Doulas are now forming a national alliance to support Jewish families with a Jewish lens on grief\, loss and death. \n\n\n\nZoe and Nadya will share stories of their personal experiences with families where a loved one is dying\, illustrating how the support of an End of Life Doula assists with anticipatory grief and the grief following a loss. They will teach people who practice the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim about ways to enhance their practice coming from a death-positive perspective in which death is not a subject to be feared or avoided. An important benefit of this approach is helping to empower the patient and their loved ones to have agency to ask for information that will help them know all their options and make informed choices that will result in an optimal healing path on the soul level. \n\n\n\nRegister on the Bikur Cholim Conference website: https://pay.cornerstone.cc/national%20bikur%20cholim%20conference

SUMMARY:Embracing Pleasure in Times of Loss and Grief
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO \n\n\n\n25th Annual OHALAH Conference for Jewish Renewal Rabbis and Cantors \n\n\n\nWorkshop: “Embracing Pleasure in Times of Loss and Grief”  \n\n\n\nRather than hardening and contracting in the midbar (the wilderness)\, Shechinah guides us to open\, to allow one’s heart to soften\, to surrender\, to release. PLEASURE is one way to do this\, a tool for empowering open-heartedness.  We live in a culture that diminishes the power of pleasure and often considers it inappropriate or irrelevant during sacred transitions.  We will explore a radical approach to accessing pleasure in a time when we are challenged to innovate new tools as we live\, encounter short and long-term illness\, and find more life-affirming ways to respond to loss and grief.
