SUMMARY:Building a Renewal Community in a Secular Jewish Landscape
DESCRIPTION:a 30-Year Case Study with Rabbi Dan Goldblatt\n\n\n\n“In 1994\, I was invited to serve Beth Chaim\, a suburban\, predominantly secular Jewish community.  I approached Reb Zalman\, zt”l\, and told him that I wasn’t sure that I was the right match. He told me that if Renewal was to have an impact on the Jewish landscape it would need to be cultivated in mainstream\, secular synagogues like Beth Chaim.  He said that this was an important test for Renewal and he would support my efforts. As I retire from my position\, 30 years later\, I believe that we developed an interesting beta test that others can learn from.”

SUMMARY:Learning To Live by Dying
DESCRIPTION:Michel de Montaigne observed in the 16th century that “to philosophize is to learn to die.” \n\n\n\nBut learning to die is also to learn how to philosophize—and\, therefore\, how to live. Please join Diane Button and Zoë Francesca Goldblatt at Clio’s for a discussion of What Matters Most: Lessons the Dying Teach Us About Living\, a provocative encouragement to examine one’s life through the lens of mortality. In their work as death doulas\, Diane and Zoë have gained knowledge from those whom they call “Wisdomkeepers\,” dying individuals who are willing to share their singular stories\, their deep fears\, and their full hearts. The result is a collection of profound reflections on what it means to live—and to die—well. Over the course of the evening\, Diane and Zoë will highlight accounts from the book and from their own experiences with the dying. The audience is invited with them to explore existential questions related to western philosophy\, psychology\, and religious belief and practices.  \n\n\n\nDiane Button is a founding partner of the Bay Area End-of-Life Doula Alliance and the author of several books related to end-of-life\, meaningful living\, and the growing impact of death doulas worldwide. She is an instructor at the University of Vermont’s End-of-Life Doula Certificate Program and holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Goddard College in Vermont. What Matters Most: Lessons the Dying Teach Us About Living is her latest book\, written at the invitation of Maria Shriver and published by Penguin Random House. Copies are available for pre-purchase with your ticket or at the event. \n\n\n\nWhere: Clio’s Books\, 335 Grand Avenue\, Oakland\, CA 94610 \n\n\n\nCost: Admission only $5\, Admission + Book $29 \n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Refuat Ha-Nefesh - A Healing Circle
DESCRIPTION:Led by two End of Life Doulas experienced in grief support and group facilitation\, the Healing Circle will open with a Jewish kavanah (intention) for healing and self-forgiveness\, followed by guidelines about sharing and confidentiality. \n\n\n\nParticipants will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and talk briefly about a Chevrah Kadisha-related experience they found to be emotionally challenging or difficult (in terms of the interaction with the met or mettah). We will give a blessing to each participant and say a prayer for the healing of their soul\, and the soul of the deceased. Using simple chant\, prayer and blessing\, the vibe of the Healing Circle will be one of El Malei Rachamim – calling in the God of Compassion\, where we communally remind each other of the power of self-compassion\, and allow space for tears of release\, should they come. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is a part of Kavod v’Nichum Gather & Grow Conference in Ojai\, CA. \n\n\n\nFacilitated by Zoë Goldblatt with Rhyena Halpern\, Donna Neumark and others. \n\n\n\n To attend this workshop\, please register for Gather & Grow

SUMMARY:New Approaches to Shiva
DESCRIPTION:Infusing Meaning into a Ritual of Comfort\n\n\n\nIn this interactive workshop we will begin by quickly asking participants to briefly share their own experiences of Shiva as either mourner or attendee. Participants will be invited to share what their ideal Shiva gathering might include. Rabbi Dan will share insights into how we can engage mourners in creating a Shiva gathering that might better serve their needs.
